WORKSHOP at Teatro della Limonaia
:: SCOTT SMITH – Material for movement - Contact Improvisation
The work is informed by exercises intended to cultivate physical and perceptual embodiment and use of the dancers own form, in relationship to their environment. The physical work uses skeletal imaging and movement, with particular focus given to the pelvis as root, and spine as limb, for integrating spherically and dimensionally into space. The perceptual work researches the genius of the senses, and the use of the senses for movement and composition.
The purpose of the class work is to extend the participants experience and use of their own body, sensation, and action. Contact improvisations will provide context for practice.
Scott Smith teaches movement, creates performance and musics, performs in peoples works, and collaborates, His early training and professional experience included modern and classical dance forms.
As antidote, his current practice is concerned with movement and improvisational focuses.
He is currently living in the UK, from where he teaches internationally, provides live music and recordings for performance projects and video, and creates solo and collaborative performance/media works.

:: CHARLOTTE ZERBEY - Contact Improvisation - The Art of Falling
These lessons delve into the connection petween breath and the action of falling. They analyze the dynamic sensations of the body as it falls in its responce to the force of gravity. The work develops the dancers technical and intuitive capacities, primary reflexes, the physical knowledge and the perception of spacial relationship to others, magnifying the freedom of choice present in every moment of the dance.
Charlotte Zerbey choreographer, vocalist, educatortrained in modern dance at the University of Utah in 1979. Over the last 25 years her work has become a multidisciplinary expression of dance and textual movement, often in concert with musicians and originally composed scores. Her performance language is influenced by an interest in the emancipation of the body while her teaching includes touch and relationship as principal tools to help students find their own performance voice. She co-founded Company Blu with A. Certini in Florence, Italy, 1989.
:: FRANCESCO MICHI and MECHI CENA – Sound and environment -
- What we talk about when we talk about aucustic design
(in collaboration with FKL - Forum Klanglandschaft)
This lecture is organized as a sort of hypothetical brainstorming during which we will see how to consider and in what measure to project our everyday sound ambient.
We will focus and discuss about our aucustic memory, our experiences and our tastes, trying to understand the motives, and we will try to focalize on the real possibility and capacity to create a sound ambient that we like. Beyond the realization of our possible projects, the lecture intends to have us interprate the different sounds that surround us. We will end with a short lesson/debate.
Francesco Michi lives and works in Firenze, Italy, where he also graduated in Philosophy and Electronic Music. In 1982, he founded FORMAT - architetture sonore -, a group of musicians/composers working in the field of electro-acoustic and computer music. Though having different musical backgrounds the members of FORMAT shared a common research and activity regarding the relations between sound and environment. FORMAT's line of research and operation is twofold. The first consists in experimenting new creative approaches with the materials which technology, especially the "plain and simple" one, offers to daily use; the second, consists in studying the acoustic environment and its modifications, and in operating on them.
Francesco Michi and FORMAT have published several theoretical essays and realized sound installations, performances, sound sculptures, sound and musical machines, radio programmes etc., in Italy and abroad. All these works are based on the concepts of acoustic ecology and acoustic design.
Mechi Cena studied electronic and computerized music between 1975 and 1987, first in the Conservatory Torin, with Enore Zaffiri (one of first experimenters in Italy), then in Florence. Contemporarily he works as a sound technician in a recording studio, and then at least until 1989, in theater he worked for the Leo de Bernardinis Company.
Around the mid 1980’s, the RAI became interested in his activity. So he writes 25 programs di “Tomografie radiofoniche” for “Cartacarbone” Radio Uno, e 12 programs di radiodramma, created “Nel cuore delle tenebre” as well as others. He abandons his artistic activity to begin again in 2004.
Up to date he has written, in collaboration with Rosaria Paretti, nine nocturnal stories, “L’anima potente dei treni” made in Lugano with RTSI (produced by Francesca Giorzi), of which we see him participate as author, but also as reader and director. With Rosaria he has founded “Radio Principato di Comodor” for radiotelevision productions.
:: MASSIMO LIVERANI – Sound and environment -
– Evolutionary and Temporal Aspects of Sound Landscape
(in collaboration with FKL - Forum Klanglandschaft)
A sound landscape can be considered in the same way as a visual one: as a combination of sensorial perceptions mostly auditory that furnish information to the surrounding environment. Within this auditory environment we are contemporarily active and passive. This landscape evolves in time according to a few peculiar modes that may be studied and defined. The basis of the lesson is my research of a few scholars, my own experience, and also a few exemplary recordings.
Massimo Liverani, born in Florence in 1961 and works as a computer developer in a small software house in Florence, Italy, for a few years but his true passion is sound and music. His interests are: ambient music, installations, soundtracks, performance and happenings, cinema, literature, and poetry. He is fond of all forms of expression, particularly the ones involving several senses simultaneously. In the 80’s I used to play in a group called REDOX. He recently works on projects such as "Distant Noise" and "Noise Theoria".
He is a member of the "OFFICINE C.R.O.M.A" association (www.officinecroma.it), which organizes events, shows and performances and has co-founded the ‘Koan Loop Ensemble’, (www.myspace.com/koanloopensemble).
