CONTACT IMPROVISATION

When I started studying and practicing Contact Improvisation, I was fascinated by how it made me feel alive and vital. C. I. has been a constant force in my work over the years and has led me to compose choreography in a way I would never have conceived. It has been a long and multiple process that has produced over fifty choreographic productions and has influenced the work, the quality, the form of movement and the communicative aspect in the composition, in a combination of fluidity, delicacy and continuity.

I realised that I didn't have to do anything I didn't want to do and that the choices in the dance were mine. I immersed myself in a deeper understanding of weight, its strength and fluidity. It emancipated me. I started learning new strategies both to take on the weight of others, (studying awareness of the center of gravity, efficiency in non-resistance, alignment of skeletal structure) and the process of giving bodyweight, (pouring it, distributing it, even throwing it) in ways that influenced the dance “I” was dancing. The simple act of leaving the weight in control or not holding it back from the flow of gravity continues, to this day, to be a great discovery, a constant starting point, a door through which sensitivity and perception become a true guide. In this way the body can relax completely, the breath can touch and move areas that can be difficult to explore consciously.

IMPROVVISAZIONE E DANZA

    IMPROVISATION and DANCE

    with Alessandro Certini
The improviser explores vocabulary of the body by rooting his/her physical thought in the perceptions, to draw on material of the imagination and practice an open approach to the unexpected and the uncertain all at once. In improvisation the performer tends to lose his or her own authorship, to fully immerse himself or herself in a path/process through which his or her actions take shape and are phrased, thus becoming exposed to the reality of the present moment. In this sense also an expert performer practices improvisation in a non-specialist way, as a "non-dancer". This artistic field remains, by its nature, inclusive and open to the dynamics of the context. Improvisation touches what belongs to the body, it is the engine of every creative act, favoring that imaginative "leap" that leads from the known to the unknown, a necessary leap to give meaning both to the simplicity of gesture and to the complexity of phrasing, to vocalism as to silence, to presence and absence. Such awareness helps the performer to be a ductile instrument, able to receive and think the movement in a dynamic of how it’s linked together, between one's own discourse and a collective narrativity.

    IMPROVISATION WORKSHOPS

with Alessandro Certini and Charlotte Zerbey
As in other disciplines, learning often takes place through imitation of the teacher's demonstration. The dance student imitates and memorises the movement sequences, but what they feel and what happens inside the body may be unknown.
Training, through exploration and improvisation, triggers creativity, allowing the dancer to transcend traditional ideas and patterns to create new forms. These processes allow those who practice them, to look beyond their dance training, and to bring all their life experience into the study of the performative act. It is a matter of developing, in the freedom of instantaneous interpretation, a capacity that transcends the usual behaviours and patterns of everyday life; overturning them, building new relationships and rules with which to play and express oneself. It is this process, which allows us to develop an originality of language and a poetic voice of our own. With these acquired skills we can share our dances, with meaningful interpretations.

    PERFORMANCE PROJECTS

with Alessandro Certini and Charlotte Zerbey
In the panorama of the performance arts, the form of improvisation, for its feature of unfixedness is created directly on stage, needs the particular contact with the environment, the collaborative relationship between the performers and the immediate communication with the public. Each performance creates a new composition because, in the aesthetic path of improvisation, each encounter between audience and performer gives life to a new context.

The work process traces the direct experience of improvisation, a form of extemporary creation towards a live presentation that leads to the performative event, digging into made on the spot composition methods.
This participatory, surprising and provocative format feeds on the mobility of thought and movement techniques, stimulates a collective intelligence, dynamism and creativity.

DANCERS WHO WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE PERFORMANCE may be called to use vocabularies such as dance, voice and physical action in a performance of about 30 minutes.

Those who participate in the performance will have to follow both the workshop and the rehearsals.
Specific rehearsals for the performance will be organised in extra workshop sessions.
We will work both on the chosen texts to be used (spoken, sung) and/or on the movement structure to be used in the piece.

VOCE E MOVIMENTO

    VOICE AND MOVEMENT

    with Charlotte Zerbey
The purpose of the work is to bring the student in touch with a creative authenticity of the voice and experience the origins of movement.

When bringing the voice in connection with the body, we see how awareness of movement, the basis of every vital action, inspires expression of which gesture and voice take their respective cues.
Vocal expression is fundamental in our daily life, so when we give sufficient attention to its use, we discover a myriad of communicative possibilities.

Through listening and the perception of the space around us in relation to breath emission, exploration of alignment and a mobility of posture, the practice of resonance through sounding creates a physical and emotional support of the body.
Also important are moments of reflection and sharing on the experience of the work done.

CORPO E NARRAZIONI DIGITALI

    BODY AND DIGITAL NARRATIVES

First part “The Body and Camera in Performance” engaging through listening and looking
Second part “Collective Digital Narratives” creating in three dimensional real time
Taught by Alessandro Certini and Charlotte Zerbey, in collaboration with Ian Birse and Laura Kavanaugh Technicians: Nicolas Certini, Rossano Monti.
Open to professional and semi professional dancers.
This workshop lab is for dancers who have a strong sense of body and performing skills. This particular research with dance and video technology will stretch ones’ capacity to listen and make choices in real time three dimensional performance setting.
The participants will have the chance to both be filmed and to actively film dance situations (close-ups of elements in contact relationship as well as various constellations in space, instrumental gestures and tactile manipulations, top-down tracing of movement patterns.
As the project progresses in the afternoon, we conduct experiments in small and larger groups with an audiovisual capture and encoding system that Instant Places is developed called "Compound Eye," a multi-camera application that allows us to combine live action with altered reality visual interventions on local and remote networks. Halfway through the week after experiencing different modes of symbiosis mediated by generative technology and multi-camera video filming techniques are defined, we will connect with musicians/video creators Ian Birse and Laura Kavanaugh. Through regular ZOOM meeting collaborations in the last few afternoons, we will find spontaneous connections between the sonic responses that Ian and Laura create using modular synthesis and live sampling of acoustic sources, with the extemporaneous actions and dance.
In these sessions we will learn to recognize and create contrapuntal relationships between movement and sound, threads of intention connecting four active forces: long developmental arcs of pause in stillness as if under a skin of tension, subterranean forces building tectonic shifts, fissures in visual space fill with animations, animations scanning machines and extending bodily gestures.
